From empty unit to open studio.
Reformer Revolution came to Matt Black at the very beginning. The lease on their Tufnell Park premises had just been signed, and the space itself was still bare — broken glazing, exposed wiring, nothing on the window beyond a handwritten sign taped to the glass.
What followed was not a single signage job but an ongoing collaboration. Over several months, as the studio moved through fit-out, pre-launch and opening, Matt Black worked alongside the founders on a rolling programme of signage — each phase responding to where the business actually was, rather than a scheme fixed in advance.
Regular calls, new ideas and revisions to what had gone before were part of the process from the start. Window graphics were replaced as messaging changed; fascia lettering and frosting arrived once the fit-out allowed for permanent signage; offers and app messaging were updated as the studio settled into daily operation.
That willingness to keep adjusting, rather than treating signage as a one-off delivery, became the defining feature of the relationship.
It is a relationship that continues. A second Reformer Revolution studio is now taking shape, with Matt Black involved from the same early stage as before.
One studio. Several months. Four signage phases.
The brief changed as the business changed.
PHASE 01
Something is coming.
Before the studio had a permanent identity, the shopfront needed to do something simpler: tell the street that something was coming. Temporary window graphics went up while the fit-out was still underway, turning bare glazing and an unfinished interior into the first piece of Reformer Revolution branding anyone in Tufnell Park would see.
The messaging was kept deliberately simple — enough to build curiosity ahead of launch, without committing to signage that would need to change once the studio’s offer was fully formed.

PHASE 02
The shopfront becomes a marketing tool.
Once the studio had a firm opening date, the windows took on a new job. Rather than simply announcing the studio’s arrival, the graphics started doing marketing work — carrying the opening date, and directing people straight to the Reformer Revolution app to book their first class.

PHASE 03
The permanent identity arrives.
With the fit-out complete, the temporary graphics gave way to the studio’s permanent signage. Individual acrylic letters, 5mm thick, were installed across the fascia to spell out the Reformer Revolution name at full building scale.
Below it, the main window was frosted for privacy, with vinyl graphics and a QR code applied over the top — giving the studio a shopfront that reads clearly from the street while keeping the space inside private.

Window frosting and vinyl messaging, detail.
Details that had to work.
Behind the finished shopfront are a handful of small decisions that had to work together — each one part of the same signage system, each one changed at a different point in the project.
Individual acrylic letters, rather than a single sign panel, let the lettering follow the line of the building rather than sit on top of it.
A restrained dark grey and white palette complements the studio’s own branding without competing with it.
Frosted film gives the treatment space privacy from the street while still letting daylight into the studio.
Vinyl graphics applied over the frosting carry information that needs to change — offers, dates, instructions — without disturbing the frosting itself.
A QR code links straight to the booking app, turning a passer-by’s glance into a class booking in a few taps.
Because the vinyl sits as a separate layer, individual messages can be swapped without reworking the whole window.
PHASE 04
Opening wasn’t the end of the project.
Once the studio was live, the signage kept evolving. Introductory offers, app messaging and seasonal promotions have all moved through the window graphics as the business has found its rhythm.
What doesn’t change is the underlying system. Frosting and fascia stay constant, while the vinyl layer carries whatever the studio needs to say that month.
UPDATED VINYL MESSAGING · SEASONAL OFFERS · ONGOING SIGNAGE SUPPORT
We’d measure this one by the number of conversations.
It is the kind of relationship where a project brief keeps being rewritten — not because the last version was wrong, but because the business had moved on. That ongoing input, more than any single sign, is what this project has really been about.
Then and now.

05 / NEXT STOP: STUDIO TWO.
A second Reformer Revolution studio is now taking shape, and Matt Black is involved from day one again — the same early-stage conversations, the same rolling approach to signage, before a single fixture is in place.
What comes out of it will depend on the building, the brief, and however the plans change between now and opening.
